A good example of the data visualization process from start to finish:

A lot of times I have a research result that is really important to my client.  I know that simply making a table and writing a paragraph about the  result will not get it nearly as much attention as creating a great picture of the result, the data that it’s based on and how it’s going to affect your life.

But sitting down to visualize a result is not something we’re taught unless you went to design school.  Sitting down at the computer is not usually the first step.  Sitting down with a blank sheet of paper and a pack of magic markers is usally the first step.

Here’s a great example of a simple design process. It includes the inspiration, the data collection process, the planning process and the visualization creation process.  This example is pretty technical when we get to the creation – they use a fancy computer program.  But it could be done more simply as well.
