Today, I am excited to be able to tell you about a way you can get involved on a global scale with the stories being told about our world. This is an opportunity where you can be integral as an active participant in the reporting process.
Datassist has been working with Orb Media, a team of experts in journalism and data science, as a data analyst and strategist. As Orb grows, your participation will be increasingly important to successfully meeting the journalism needs of the global public. Take a look at Orb Media’s first story and new website.
Orb Media is a new journalism organization that is challenging assumptions, beginning with registering as a non-profit organization. They want to be clear that they exist to serve the public. Founded by Molly Bingham, Orb is committed to delivering information to the public, as opposed to profit to shareholders.
Orb media is challenging assumptions as well in their methods of journalism. Fusing massive data analysis with knowledge from the crowd, along with professional on-the-ground reporting, ORB Media provides a way for everyone to get involved in this new kind of journalism.
Orb begins by focusing on eight topics that we all have in common: food, water, energy, health, education, environment, trade and governance. Then, rather than bombarding the public with breaking news, while providing little in the way of context, Orb asks how events may (or may not) fit into a meaningful, global trend, based on evidence-based reporting. Orb treats both massive data analysis and the knowledge in the crowd as primary sources to provide a more holistic view of the world. With this basis, Orb’s teams of professional journalists test the insights that emerge from data analysis and the crowd by conducting on-the-ground reporting. Applying their critical thinking, they distill the complex and often contradictory information into a story everyone can readily understand.
Orb delivers each story in four versions – text, audio, multimedia and data – in the world’s most widely spoken languages. These stories are designed to be accessible on any internet connected phone, tablet, or computer.
It’s very early days for Orb; the company’s brand new and still in development. But, if you’d like to join them on their journey, I invite you to check them out at Orbmedia.org.
